Remote First

Teams should always act as if everyone is remote, even when some are co-located.

Implications

  • Avoid physical assets that are difficult for remote workers to interact with. e.g. tickets on a physical board.
  • On team calls, all team members should join the call rather than co-located people sitting around a single device.
  • We prefer teams located in single time zones so synchronous communication can be maintained.

Rationale

It's important that everyone on the team feels engaged and part of the team. This can be difficult when some working practices differ between those co-located and those working remote. Therefore it's important for the team to have practices that are the same for co-located and remote workers.
